What are the most common ways to treat dry scalp associated with dandruff?
Dry scalp associated with dandruff can be treated with products containing at least one of the following types of active ingredients: Active ingredients such as pyrithione zinc (PTZ) and selenium sulfide treat the cause of dandruff on the scalp. Anti-proliferative agents such as coal tar slow down the shedding process. Keratolytic agents such as sulfur and salicylic acid break down the keratin that holds skin cells together on the uppermost layer of the scalp. When the top layer of cells are shed, they are separate rather than in clumps. These agents treat the effects, rather than the cause of dandruff.

We tried everything from generic brands to heavy medicinal shampoos with coal tar, and nothing worked on a consistent basis. The ones that did work for a while smelled just terrible and my son hated them. I found this because I had a coupon and it has worked beautifully! It's really pretty incredible. It's cleared up a problem my son has had his entire life (he's now 13) in just a few uses. It also smells good and it leaves his hair soft and fluffy instead of dried out. Another draw back is that you also have to purchase a dry scalp conditioner, which is another $12. It does an excellent job. It cleans and moisturizes my scalp well. It does have a nice scent and you will notice a slight, tingly sensation. I do notice that afterwards my hair is softer, has more volume and is more manageable.However, if you do not want to pay that price I also recommend the Head and Shoulders 2-in-1 Dry Scalp Care. It is the shampoo and conditioner and retails for $9 at most stores. I've tried every brand available, including Head & Shoulders, but the only thing that kept me flake free was T-Gel Extra Strength(1% coal tar). Even T-Gel regular strength did nothing for me. Well, I ran out of T-Gel, saw a commercial for this, and found a coupon for this, so why not give it a try. I love it! After 2-3 uses, I was flake free. My wife noticed that I barely itch now. It's affordable, it's 2-in-1, lathers really well, and it doesn't dry me out. Make sure you leave it in your hair for at least 5 minutes for best results. Get a timer, because 5 min. is longer than you think. My wife doesn't even have dandruff, but she loves it too! |
